This year the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has initiated two criminal cases on espionage against three foreigners, the SBU says in its 2011 report, according to UKRINFORM.
This year the national security service also smashed 15 gangs comprised of Ukrainian and foreign citizens. The criminals were involved in smuggling and illegal sale of nuclear materials, radioactive and chemical substances.
87 kg of nuclear material (uranium-235 and uranium-238), 600 kg of radiation contaminated pipes, more than 22 tons of high-toxic 1-class hazard chemical substance were withdrawn from illegal circulation.
Security service agents also revealed eight crimes committed "in a socially dangerous way, and with signs of a terrorist attack". During the mentioned period 154 persons were revealed who had deliberately transmitted false report about the threat to public safety, destruction or damage of property.
