At an extended meting of the panel Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Pshonka has charged his subordinates to release within a month those detainees, charged on decriminalized articles of the Criminal Code, ForUm correspondent reports.

Pshonka has criticized local prosecutors for their slow work on changing measures of restrain for detainees charged with the crimes decriminalized by the parliament. In particular, he charged Kyiv prosecutor Anatoly Melnik to finish the process by January 20.

The Prosecutor General has also drawn attention of his staff to the large number of detainees being kept in pre-trial prisons for more than a year and a half. Pshonka considers this fact as a result of unsatisfactory work of investigators. According to the Prosecutor General the new Criminal Procedure Code will not let to arrest suspects for such long period of time.

"With the adoption of the new Criminal Procedure Code there will be no more such freedom either for investigators or judges or prosecutors," he declared adding the new Code provides for strict regulations regarding terms of detention.
