President Viktor Yanukovych believes Ukraine and Russia should further deepen their gas cooperation, he said at a meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia on December 20, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.
According to Viktor Yanukovych, it is important to complete the Ukrainian-Russian gas talks as soon as possible. "It is very important that this work approached its completion. We are committed to not only completing these negotiations, but also making them a matter of medium-term perspective, so that we could solve some issues now, this year, and made some strategic decisions as well. Later, of course, we should deepen the gas cooperation," said Viktor Yanukovych.
"I am pleased that we have reached some understanding, and have a prospect," the President said.
For his part, the President of Russia also called for the importance of deepening the gas cooperation between the countries. "There are different approaches to establishing this partnership. I think it is time to do it. It would be advantageous for the Russian and Ukrainian peoples both. As specific matters are concerned, I think we could start these negotiations... But this subject is the matter for our Governments to work on," said Dmitry Medvedev.
Speaking about Ukrainian-Russian cooperation in other areas, the President of Ukraine mentioned nuclear energy. "Our companies, in our opinion, are working effectively. We have good prospects for cooperation," said Viktor Yanukovych. In his opinion, Ukraine and Russia also have the potential to enhance cooperation in electricity transportation.
The President praised the level of the 20th CIS Summit and expressed confidence that cooperation within the CIS can be expanded.
Viktor Yanukovych also called positive the decision to establish a free trade area in the Commonwealth. "The fact that you took that, I would say, historic decision is very good. It is inspiring for all. But we should think about synchronizing our actions to ratify [this document]," he said.
