Ukraine has "definitely and consciously" decided to join Europe, despite the pressure exerted on this process by "other interested parties", Ukraine Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryshchenko told the German Handelsblatt newspaper.

"Ukraine is in a unique geopolitical position. Being a bridge between Europe and Russia, we are also a guarantor of peace and stability in the region. We attach great importance to friendly relations with all our neighbors. But we have definitely and consciously decided to join Europe, despite the pressure from other interested parties," Hryshchenko said, UKRINFORM reports.

The diplomat also stressed that in an atmosphere of global uncertainty and complex political events Europe can not afford itself to turn its back on Ukraine.

Hryshchenko also added that Ukraine's policy of European integration particularly strongly needs support from Germany. "Working together we will achieve a steady progress in our bilateral relations, issues of energy security and other reforms that in the future will enable Germany to back Ukraine's membership in the EU," the minister noted.
