The adoption of a new Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine will become another step in establishing a qualitatively new system of legal protection of a citizen, the society, and state from criminal offenses and improving the criminal proceedings, President Viktor Yanukovych said at today’s solemn meeting on the occasion of Court Employee’s Day, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

The President also stressed that the reform does not limit itself to the adoption of a new Criminal Procedure Code. According to him, the law to humanize liability for economic violations also aims to establish the standards of humanism in the area of criminal penalties, to reduce the use of imprisonment as a preventive measure, etc.

"Being aware of the fact that human rights and liberties are guaranteed not only by the court, in November 2011, I have created the Working Group to Reform the Advocacy and Prosecution," said Viktor Yanukovych. He said the purpose of this working group is to fundamentally renew the legislative regulation of the judiciary and the bar on the basis of ensuring the observation of constitutional rights and implementing internationally recognized democratic standards in this area.

"The priority of this reform is also in our country's commitments to the Council of Europe, which has repeatedly urged the Ukrainian authorities to implement it," said the President of Ukraine.
