President Viktor Yanukovych believes the adoption of a new Criminal Procedure Code would ensure the harmonization of national criminal procedural law with the European standards, he said at a meeting on the occasion of Attorney’s Day, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.
According to Viktor Yanukovych, first, it is necessary to implement the principle of competition and equality of sides, and guarantee high level of protection of human, and citizen rights and freedoms.
In addition, the President said, the new Code would provide the law enforcement with new effective mechanisms to combat crime, would increase the efficiency, effectiveness and fairness of criminal proceedings.
"The implementation of completely new approaches in the area of criminal responsibility and criminal justice should lead to qualitative changes in the Ukrainian legal system expected in the society," he said.
The President stressed that currently, the new Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine is being finalized and the document has already received a generally positive assessment of the Council of Europe experts.
