Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryshchenko has said he is confident that Ukraine has no alternative but to move to the European Union, simultaneously building close political and economic relations with Russia. He announced this on the ICTV channel, according to UKRINFORM.

"We see no other alternative but to consistently move towards European standards, sign and ratify the association agreement, as well as an agreement on a free trade area, and simultaneously maintain and strengthen our positions on markets in Russia and other post-Soviet countries," he said.

Hryshchenko said that the sooner Ukraine signs free trade agreements with its neighbors and partners in the East and West, the sooner it will be possible to minimize through joint efforts the consequences of financial crisis, if its next wave still happens.

"Ukraine has the opportunity to forge its strategic policy of integration into the EU and simultaneously build the closest and broadest economic and political relations with Russia and other post-Soviet countries," the minister said.

Hryshchenko said that Ukraine, as well as Russia and the EU, was tied to global processes and could not build its economy away from these global processes.
