Ukrainian legislation on the preservation of cultural heritage needs to be significantly improved, particularly in the part of historical sites protection and beginning new construction, President Viktor Yanukovych said at today’s meeting of the Public Humanitarian Council.

"The law should clearly define the priority of cultural heritage protection over town planning. The necessary amount of legal, organizational, financial, economic, scientific and other means should be provided to protect it," he said.

The President also stressed that the scope of cultural heritage protection and preservation should be determined not only by the interests of builders, but also by the principles of conventions ratified by Ukraine.

"This position should be considered when determining policy priorities and preparing the appropriate amendments to national legislation," he said.
