President of the Russian gas society, vice speaker of Russian parliament Valeriy Yazev believes Ukraine might get lucky in gas talks with Russia.

"If Ukraine does not agree with the contract, let it appeal to Gazprom and hold negotiations. If Ukraine achieves some discounts, well it got lucky, and the Russian side will observe new agreement. If Ukraine does not have luck, we will demand observation of the existing contract," Yazev said.

He also noted that Yulia Tymoshenko's conviction is an internal matter of Ukraine, and even if Russia and EU expressed their opinion, it cannot be an argument in the gas price issue.

"My position is unchanged: we have a contract till 2019, which must be observed both by Gazprom and Naftogaz," the official said.

At the same time he noted that the contract is not being followed in full. In particular, the Russian side does not release penalties for undertaken gas, according to the contract.
