The construction of the Centralized nuclear waste storage has started in the Chernobyl zone, ForUm's correspondent reports.

The opening ceremony was attended by the head of the state agency on alienation zone managing Volodymyr Kholosha and British ambassador Leigh Turner.

According to Kholosha, the nuclear waste from all over Ukraine will be stored in there for 50 years. "With the assistance of the Great Britain and the European Commission we have made planning of the storage and collected means for its construction. All nuclear waste, which is now kept in special plants or enterprises, will be transferred to the new storage and locked there for 50 years minimum," he said.

Kholosha told that the storage can receive up to 21 thousand of ionizing radiation sources annually, and 400 thousand of nuclear waste units will be buried there during 10-12 years.

Khorosha pointed out that the storage facilities will keep only Ukrainian nuclear waste, as the legislation forbids keeping nuclear waste from other states.
