Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov is convinced that Ukraine needs to limit the dollar’s circulation and to strengthen the clearing transaction in hryvnia. He told journalists while visiting the construction of a new metro station EANE today, commenting on the NBU decision to exchange currency with passport.

Premier said that yesterday he met with the head of the National Bank of Serhiy Arbuzov. He noted that the National Bank has sufficient autonomy to make decisions related to currency regulations.

"I said Serhiy Arbuzov that there are some complaints, some concerns not only from ordinary people but also from the Association of Ukrainian Banks (on the currency exchange with passport - Ed.)," Mykola Azarov said, ForUm learned from the Party of Regions press office.

Therefore, he said, there is a need to consider the first experience and problems of currency exchange with passport. "I have no doubt that the National Bank’s decision is correct. We must finally seriously clear the situation with shadow economy, salaries in envelopes. In general, the dollar should not go in our country as a means of payment. We have normal currency – it is hryvnia," Mykola Azarov emphasized.

Prime Minister emphasized that the Ukrainian currency is reliable, stable, and it should be used by clearing transactions in Ukraine, and dollar should be use to travel on vacation. "Its circulation in the country should be limited," Prime Minister stressed.

Mykola Azarov said that for 20 years Ukraine paid with foreign currency, and in Europe, he said, no one pays with hryvnia, but their national currency.

Under the new decree number 278 of the National Bank of Ukraine, from September 23 currency exchange in any amount has to be carried out only with a passport or other document, indicating the place of residence.
