The Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union hopes that the Eastern Partnership summit in Warsaw on September 29-30 will confirm the conclusion of negotiations on a free trade area (FTA) between Ukraine and the European Union, spokesperson for the Polish presidency Konrad Niklewicz has said Tuesday, according to UKRINFORM.

"It would be especially important to confirm this fact, for the Ukrainian market is huge, and the establishment of joint economic space with Ukraine would be beneficial for both the EU and the Ukrainian side," he emphasized.

Niklewicz said the EU countries are finalizing the final declaration of the Eastern Partnership summit. According to him, it would probably be an item on the "confirmation of the aspirations of eastern neighbors to political association with the EU". "The summit should reaffirm the European ambitions of the Partnership countries and their desire for deeper economic integration, and in the future - to create a joint economic area of the EU and the Partnership countries," the Polish presidency spokesman underscored.

Niklewicz stressed that Warsaw seeks to increase the budget for the Eastern Partnership project still within the current EU budget, which will be in force until 2013. However, the summit declaration does not specify a specific amount because the document contains strategic position, rather than executive imperatives, he added.

According to the official, the summit participants are also due to pay a significant role to the deepening of EU cooperation with civil society organizations of the Eastern Partnership. "The summit should reaffirm the establishment of two new mechanisms of the EU, which will help develop civil society in these countries," he said. The Polish presidency representative said that it is about institutions, which so far have working titles Civil Society Facility and European Endowment for Democracy.

Poland expects that the Eastern Partnership summit, which has invited top officials from the EU and the Partnership countries, will be one of the most important events as part of the Polish presidency.
