The United States welcomes steps taken by Ukraine to give up its highly enriched uranium, U.S. President Barack Obama has said in a letter to his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych.

Since the historic meeting in Washington in April 2010, the two countries have witnessed many steps to enhance the safety of nuclear materials around the world and strengthen common efforts to prevent the smuggling of nuclear materials, the press service of the Ukrainian president quoted Obama as saying.

The U.S. president also noted the progress made by Ukraine in implementing the joint statement regarding nuclear safety issues, which was adopted in April 2010.

Obama also expressed hope to meet with Yanukovych during the second summit on nuclear safety, which will be held in Seoul in March 2012. Obama said that he was looking forward to attending the summit and hoping to meet with Yanukovych. He said that working together, the two countries will ensure the success of the summit in Seoul and help better protect the world from nuclear terrorism.
