The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) has reported that 42% of Ukrainians believe that the trials of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko are politically motivated, IFES Director of Applied research Rakesh Sharma told a news conference dedicated to the IFES survey co-financed by the USAID.

The sociologist said that the trial of Tymoshenko is politically motivated for residents of Ukraine's west (63%), north (54%), center (43%) and Kyiv (43%). However, residents of the country's south (46%) and east (44%) believe the charges are legitimate. The same picture with an almost identical percent is seen throughout the regions as referred to the trial of Yuriy Lutsenko, he said, UKRINFORM reported.

The poll also found that 32% of respondents said they were concerned about certain curtailment of rights and freedoms or they are very concerned about any signs of deterioration of the situation with human rights and freedoms (26%). Only two of the 10 surveyed expressed satisfaction that the Yanukovych administration respects the rights of and freedoms, Sharma added.
