An epidemic of three influenza viruses is expected in Ukraine this autumn and winter, Kyiv's chief immunologist, head of Kyiv Center for Clinical Immunology Oleh Nazarov has said.
"Potentially, this year we are going to have three strains of the virus - California, Perth and the Australian Brisbane," he said, UKRINFORM reported.
According to him, the Australian Brisbane is a relatively new strain. "The last time it was here in 2008 and in three years, respectively, the immune memory of the people has weakened to it," the immunologist emphasized.
In August, MD Alla Mironenko, the head of respiratory and other viral infections at the Institute of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases, predicted that four influenza viruses are expected in Ukraine.
In her words, most likely this year's flu epidemic will be of two kinds with A and B types. Moreover, the two strains have never appeared in Ukraine.
