The launch of the Nord Stream gas pipeline between Russia and Germany may have little impact on the transit of gas through the Ukrainian gas transit system, Ukraine's Minister Energy and Coal Industry Yuriy Boiko has said.

"With the increase in gas consumption in Europe, we expect that if gas transit reduces, so it will be insignificant," he said.

As previously reported, on September 6 the Nord Stream pipeline started filling its first line with technical gas - a new route for exporting Russian gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that with the launch of the gas pipeline Ukraine loses its exclusive transit position. According to Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller, the Nord Stream in the direction of the Czech Republic and Germany will supply 20 billion cubic meters of gas, which are currently supplied in transit through Ukraine.
