Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Boiko has said in an interview with the government's Uriadovy Kurier newspaper that there will not be any merger between Ukraine's Naftogaz and Russia's Gazprom.

"There won't be either a Naftogaz-Gazprom merger, or any kind of Belarusian scenario. This is Ukraine's position," he said, UKRINFORM reported.

Boiko said that Ukraine and Russia were continuing to hold talks on cooperation in the gas sector.

"The negotiations should soon be put on an official, rather than a working level. Then our citizens will be informed about what the government is proposing to our Russian colleagues," the minister said.

He said that Ukraine's principled position was that cooperation should be developed on an equal footing.

Boiko added that the talks were not easy, but he said he hoped that the parties would reach a compromise, taking into account the strategic level of their relationship.

The official again noted that next year Ukraine would reduce gas consumption by about 10 billion cubic meters, simultaneously increasing the production of its own fuel.
