Over the weekend, more than 23,000 signatures were collected under an appeal to the president of Ukraine urging him to use constitutional measures to release former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko from custody. The signatures was collected in the tent city outside the Pechersk District Court where the ex-premier’s trial is being held.

“The signatures were collected from people that passed through the tent cit on Saturday and Sunday. A delegation has been formed that will deliver this demand to the Presidential Administration at noon," said BYuT-Batkivshchyna MP Yuriy Odarchenko, according to Tymoshenko's official website.

On August 5, 2011, Pechersk District Court Judge Rodion Kireyev ordered that Yulia Tymoshenko be arrested for alleged contempt of court. The ex-premier has been held at the Lukyanivka detention facility ever since.

The defense has filed 12 motions urging the trial judge to change the measure of restraint imposed on the former head of government. They have all been denied.
