Ukraine is interested in resuming supplies of the Turkmen gas, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov in Kyiv Wednesday.

"Surely, we are interested in resuming Turkmen natural gas supplies to Ukraine - both via the traditional routes and from the perspective of construction of the Caspian-Black Sea gas pipeline," Azarov emphasized, UKRINFORM reported.

He noted that as far as the economy develops, Ukraine will be ready to contribute financially to the project.

The prime minister stressed that in the medium term, the project will be extremely beneficial to both Ukraine and Turkmenistan.

Azarov recalled that Ukraine had supported the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan to diversify export routes of Turkmen hydrocarbons to global markets.

The Ukrainian premier noted that Ukraine is continuing negotiations with Russia regarding the possibility of resumption of supplies of Turkmen gas.

The prime minister informed that Ukraine is working to diversify the supply of hydrocarbons, in particular, there are plans to build a terminal in Odessa to receive liquefied gas of 20 billion cubic meters in capacity.

At the same time Azarov reiterated again: the most reliable and cheapest way of transportation of Asian hydrocarbons to Europe is the Ukrainian gas transport system, which today can carry up to 140 billion cubic meters of gas. After the modernization of the domestic gas transport system its capacity can be increased to 200 billion cubic meters.

"Nothing is more reliable than our transport system, which is now able to supply 140 billion cubic meters of natural gas, and after the reconstruction its capacity can be increased to 200 billion," Azarov underscored.

He also emphasized that Ukraine has an extensive system of underground gas storages, which allows in the autumn-winter period to significantly increase natural gas supplies.

Rashid Meredov, in turn, noted that Ukraine and Turkmenistan have good prospects for intensifying cooperation in the energy sector.
