UK Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt has commented on the decision to detain Yulia Tymoshenko, following her court appearance on 5 August.

Speaking on Saturday, Mr Burt said:

"I was very concerned to learn of the detention of the Ukrainian opposition politician, Yulia Tymoshenko, on 5 August.

"With our EU and international partners, the United Kingdom will continue to monitor closely the trial of Ms Tymoshenko and the cases against a number of her former ministers and officials.

"I urge the Ukrainian authorities to adhere to the highest democratic standards, including respect for human rights, the rule of law and an independent, transparent and fair judicial process. These are prerequisites for its closer integration with the European Union."

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement in response to the arrest of Yulia Tymoshenko:

"Canada is concerned by the apparently politically motivated persecution, and now arrest, of Yulia Tymoshenko.

"The appearance of political bias in judicial proceedings undermines the rule of law. Canada urges the Ukrainian government to strengthen judiciary independence and continues to support efforts to build a peaceful, democratic and prosperous society in Ukraine."

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed doubt that the trial of Yulia Tymoshenko is not politically motivated.

"We have doubts over the motives of this trial. In particular, we think the right to defense wasn’t ensured," says the statement by the French MFA given today by the French ambassador to Ukraine to Hryhoriy Nemyria, deputy head of Batkivshchyna, at a meeting with EU ambassadors.

"As we have repeatedly stressed, respect for the rule of law is a key element in building a partnership between France, the European Union and Ukraine. France and its European partners continue to closely monitor the situation with Yulia Tymoshenko," says the document.

The US Government shares those concerns and urges that Mrs. Tymoshenko’s incarceration be reviewed and consideration be given to her immediate release.

We have raised our concerns with the Government of Ukraine regarding the legal proceedings against Mrs. Tymoshenko and other opposition figures and will continue to closely monitor those proceedings.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has requested access to visit Mrs. Tymoshenko during her incarceration.
