Yulia Tymoshenko’s lawyer Mykola Siryi has said that the defense in the near future plans to send an appeal to Verkhovna Rada Human Rights Commissioner Nina Karpachova requesting that she become an independent participant in the trial of the ex-premier in order to monitor compliance with the fundamental rights of the accused in court.

"We will ask that the Verkhovna Rada Human Rights Commissioner join this case as an independent participant and observe all the human rights violations that take place," said Mykola Siryi.

In his turn, lawyer Serhiy Vlasenko, dismissed from defense of Yulia Tymoshenko, stressed that since the start of the trial the court has regularly and flagrantly infringed Yulia Tymoshenko’s right to defense.

"A person accused of committing a crime has only one right – the right to defense, and this right is constantly being violated. According to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the right to defend oneself is a fundamental human right. One of the responsibilities of the parliamentary human rights commissioner is to protect rights and freedoms. According to the criminal procedure law, a representative of the human rights commissioner has the right to join any case, and we will insist on this in order to monitor compliance with civil rights and freedoms during this case," he added.
