Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko has called the recent statement by European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule the latest warning to the Ukrainian government of the inadmissibility of political repression against opponents.

"Today Mr. Fule said that the president of Ukraine is being warned and that he is deeply concerned that there is political repression in Ukraine against Yuriy Lutsenko, against me, against other opposition politicians, and urged the government to stop the repression and ensure that this trial is open and transparent. But, unfortunately, this government that declares its European aspirations once again violated all European norms and values and continues to eliminate the opposition through judges like Kireyev, Vovk and others," Yulia Tymoshenko told journalists.

Yulia Tymoshenko believes such actions by the government harm Ukraine’s image. "I do not want Ukraine at an accelerated pace to go from being a free and independent state to a regime that is seen by the world as a rogue nation," she said.

Stefan Fule, European commissioner for enlargement and European neighborhood policy, raised the issue this week at a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Gryshchenko.

"I also expressed once more my deep concern at the recent developments in the cases of Mrs Tymoshenko and other members of the former government of Ukraine. I recalled the EU's concern at suggestions of political motivation behind these cases. In this context, I emphasised the need to ensure maximum levels of transparency and fairness in investigations, prosecutions and trials."
