A plant for the production of steel barrels and concrete containers for the storage of radioactive waste from the Chornobyl nuclear power plant has opened in Slavutych (Kyiv region), the press service of the Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry has reported, according to UKRINFORM.

The construction of the plant was funded by the European Commission and carried out under the TACIS Nuclear Safety Program.

According to the ministry, the overall project cost is EUR 5.568 million. The plant has a capacity of producing 34,250 steel barrels and 700 concrete containers per year. The plant will reach such production figures within two or three months.
