EU diplomats accredited in Kyiv will follow the court hearing that starts today in the Pechersk District Court in Kyiv.

"This issue is very important for the European Union,” – said Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira, Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine.

The diplomat noted that in 2009, EU member-states acted as intermediaries during the gas crisis between Ukraine and Russia which finally ended with the signing of the gas agreement.

Police officers do not even allow the press into the yard of the Pechersk court, explaining that there is sufficient number of journalists in the courtroom.

Tymoshenko's defense lawyer Serhiy Vlasenko reminded that president Yanukovych promised a public process. "Here you can see what it means for Yanukovych to hold a public process. It is 20 paid students in the same T-shirts sitting in the courtroom since the night and occupying seats so no place is left for mass media. There is no even a standing place for Tymoshenko's husband, daughter and son-in-law," Vlasenko said.
