Prime Minister Mykola Azarov insists there is no alternative to changes in the pension system, the head of government said in an interview with UKRINFORM.

"We are convinced that we need to make changes to the pension system," Azarov said adding that the current solidary pension system can not cope with the existing load (almost 14 million pensioners). That is, "apart from this system, we need to add more," Azarov emphasized.

In addition, according to the prime minister, the government plans to develop a system of incentives to increase the retirement age, introducing a three-year adjustment period.

"Within three years, we have to work out an incentive system that would enable our people to voluntarily decide to extend their pensionable service, on a later retirement," the prime minister said.

According to him, now it is proposed to introduce a "fairly mild version of pension reform, which, once again I say, is the lesser evil of what we could offer".
