Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko plans today to meet with European diplomats to discuss the state of democratic rights and freedoms in Ukraine and political repression of opponents of the ruling government.

"At the request of ambassadors of all European countries I’m going to meet with them because their concern over what’s going on in Ukraine is clear," Yulia Tymoshenko told journalists today outside the Pechersk Court in Kyiv.

Yulia Tymoshenko said that during the meeting they will discuss ways to counter political repression in Ukraine. "They want to speak with me right away and understand how to stop the situation in Ukraine, which, based on global opinion, is one of authoritarianism, kleptocracy, absence of rights and law. What the government is doing today has nothing to do with democracy," she added.

"I am going to this meeting right now and will defend all political prisoners who have been jailed illegally: Yuriy Lutsenko, Makarenko, Didenko, Shepitko, including the former deputy defense minister who, according to Yuriy Lutsenko, yesterday was moved to a ward where they usually hold people with tuberculosis, who is behind bars for no reason," said Yulia Tymoshenko.
