Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko met today with a delegation from the U.S. Congress that included Senators John Kyl, Jeff Sessions, Michael Crapo and Ron Johnson.

The American legislators expressed their concern over the deteriorating investment climate and repression of political freedoms in Ukraine.

"We are getting very disturbing signals from our businessmen. Of particular concern is the worsening of conditions for doing business, corruption, government quotas for agricultural goods and setback in political freedom in Ukraine," Senator Sessions said during the meeting with Yulia Tymoshenko, according to Tymoshnko's official website.

Yulia Tymoshenko said that democracy in Ukraine is being eroded and an authoritarian system of government is being put in place, as evidenced by systematic violations of the constitution and laws by President Yanukovych and his government, disregard for human rights and freedoms, repression and intimidation of the opposition by the government, subordination of the justice system to the presidential administration, censorship, beatings and disappearance of journalists.

"A year ago Ukraine boarded a train heading away from democracy and European integration. Without the introduction of true values, the investment climate in Ukraine will not improve. Unfortunately, Yanukovych’s oligarchs have privatized all spheres of life in Ukraine – economic, political and social," said Yulia Tymoshenko.

The American lawmakers stressed that Ukraine is a strategic partner for the U.S. and that it’s very important to engage in dialogue on bilateral cooperation not only with the current government in Ukraine, but also the opposition.

They also praised the efforts of Yulia Tymoshenko and her party to defend democratic values in Ukraine.

"We thank you for your courage and fight for Ukraine’s freedom," said Senator Johnson.
