The European Commission has received the mandate to start negotiations with Ukraine on the revision of visa facilitation agreements, taking into account proposals from Ukraine.

A respective decision was taken at a meeting of the EU Council for Justice and Home Affairs in Luxembourg on April 11. The document is intended to complement the existing EU bilateral agreement with Ukraine on visa facilitation.

The negotiations on this issue will begin in May.

An UKRINFORM learned from diplomatic sources that the proposals of the Ukrainian side would be taken into account during the negotiation process, in particular, on increasing the number of persons covered by the simplified visa regime and including in the list representatives of public and religious organizations, carriers and experts involved in cooperation with European institutions and enterprises. It is also proposed to simplify the list of required documents for journalists.

In March 2011, the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee proposed expanding the list of categories of Ukrainian citizens who can enjoy the benefits of the visa facilitation agreement, which entered into force on January 1, 2008.
