President to meet farmers to discuss land reform

On April 11 the President of Ukraine will meet with agrarians to discuss the progress of land reform in the country and to hear their opinion on it, Viktor Yanukovych has said on Monday, April 4, at a meeting with Prime Minister Mykola Azarov.

"It is extremely important to conduct consultations with farmers on all the issues that seem ambiguous to the farmers.

For example, the question about who will be able to be a real owner of land, when it becomes a commodity? Will Ukrainian black soils, which are our golden land stock, remain in the hands of people who actually work on our land?

I am particularly concerned about the possibility of Ukrainian farmers’ interests being infringed in the process of land reform,” Viktor Yanukovych said.

The President and the Prime Minister have also discussed the progress of spring field works, the issue of quotas of grain sales, changes to the budget that would provide the opportunity to direct more funds into social protection of poor people, cooperation with the IMF and other issues.
