Alan Dershowitz, a well-known American lawyer in criminal cases, will protect ex-president Leonid Kuchma.
Dershowitz is a professor at Harvard Law School, known for his participation in high-profile criminal cases, the Financial Times says.
“I look forward to contributing my experience as a defence lawyer and specialist on forensic evidence to this case,” said Mr Dershowitz in a statement circulated by a spokesman for Mr Kuchma.
“I am especially committed to the search for truth in this case.”
As reported, on March 22, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine opened a criminal investigation against Leonid Kuchma, and brought him charges of abuse of power and official authority, which led to serious consequences (death of journalist Georgy Gongadze).
On March 23, investigators questioned the former president at the PGO and released him on his own recognizance.
