President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych has visited the Olympic National Sports Complex to learn about the process of its reconstruction.

In his comments to journalists after the visit, President Yanukovych noted that the date of completion and opening of the stadium will be known in the second half of May.

"The problem with the complex is that we started its reconstruction too late," Viktor Yanukovych said. Besides, he added, the uniqueness of cable structure to be installed by German contractors at the stadium may cause delays in the construction process.

According to Viktor Yanukovych, the permission to erect the cable structure, which is one of a kind, has been received only today and the whole process may take about a month.

"In other words, by the end of April we will know the approximate date of completion of the construction, and by the end of May we finally know the date of its opening," Viktor Yanukovych said.

According to the President, there are two options. "The first option, we will be trying our best to realize, is opening the stadium on the Independence Day – on the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence," he said. However, he added this depends on many factors, primarily the technological ones, such as installation of the roof.

The second option, President Yanukovych said, is opening the stadium in autumn 2011 at latest. "In accordance with the protocol signed with the UEFA, we must hold two football games at the stadium in 2011. We must implement this protocol," Viktor Yanukovych stressed.

Separately, the Head of State brought up the issue of construction of a stadium in Lviv. He said he plans to visit the city soon. "We have a more predictable situation in Lviv. As experts say, the schedule that we have for Lviv will be met," he said.
