Ukrainian communists are collecting funds to restore a statue to Josef Stalin, which was blown up in the Ukrainian city of Zaporzhe on New Year's Eve, RIA Novosti reported.

"[The communists] bring voluntary contributions to join the common cause initiated by the communists and veterans of Zaporzhe," the Communist party's regional committee in Bilopillia, in northeastern Ukraine, said.

The three-meter-long statue stood near the regional building of Ukraine's Communist party and was blown to pieces about an hour before New Year's was to be celebrated.

The statue was previously attacked in late December when unknown assailants cut off Stalin's head. Nine members of a Ukrainian nationalist organization were later arrested for being behind the attack.
