Ukraine plans to increase capacities of underground gas storages (UGS) on the country's east, Fuel and Energy Minister Yuriy Boiko told a conference "Energy Problems of Europe and the Issues of Russian-Ukrainian Cooperation" in Kyiv on Tuesday, UKRINFORM reported.

"We are planning to expand storages in the eastern part of our country in order to ensure the same (on availability of the large volume UGS on the country's west - Ed.) prompt response to the change of temperature in winter and to provide our industry even more reliably," Boiko said.

The gas transportation system of Ukraine consists of main gas pipelines, distribution networks and gas storages. Total length of Ukrainian gas pipelines makes up 283,200 kilometers.

The system unites 72 compressor stations (112 compressor shops) and 12 underground storages with the largest in Europe, following Russia, active volume of gas - over 32 billion cu m or 21.3 % of general European active capacity.
