Moscow and Kiev have signed an agreement to guarantee gas transits through Ukrainian territory, Ukrainian Minister of Fuel and Energy Yuriy Boyko said on Tuesday.

The deal upholds an earlier one between Russia's gas giant Gazprom and Ukraine's Naftogaz on the transfer of 112 billion cubic meters of gas annually over the next five years.

"It is a significant compromise, and I am grateful to our Russian colleagues that we have received some clarity in this issue," Boyko said at a conference in Kiev, RIA Novosti reported.

He said the guarantees rendered any future gas disputes impossible.

On January 1, 2009, Gazprom axed gas transits to the EU through Ukraine in a row over prices. Transits resumed on January 19.
