Viktor Yanukovych and his cohorts are destroying democracy in Ukraine, and the main evidence is the election campaign for local councils and mayors, says Yulia Tymoshenko, according to her official website.

"The government has an absolute majority in the Central Election Commission and the election commissions in certain districts. They also passed a law by which decisions can be passed if only three of the 18 commission members are present. We already have experience with such three-member committees called ‘troikas’: in the Stalin era, troikas made quick decisions about the execution, imprisonment or deportation of political dissidents. According to the law, these threesomes have the right to expel election observers from the polling stations. This didn’t happen even under President Kuchma. Today, Kuchma the dictator looks like a dove of peace next to Yanukovych the ‘democrat’," Yulia Tymoshenko said in an interview with Spiegel Online.

Yulia Tymoshenko said that society is aware of the ruling government’s machinations. "59% of the population believes the elections will be rigged. Today the last remaining achievement of the revolution is being destroyed – fair elections."

She also stressed that the authorities are implementing a "special ideological propaganda campaign" against her and the Batkivshchyna party.

"My opponents dream of the end of the ‘Tymoshenko era’, for public support for me and my political party to simply disappear. But this is only a dream that will never become reality. In the presidential election in February we got almost as many votes as Yanukovych."
