Batkivshchyna will defend the status of Ukrainian as the only official language in Ukraine, says the party’s leader, Yulia Tymoshenko.

"We will do all we can to prevent a second official language from being introduced in Ukraine," Yulia Tymoshenko said Sunday at a press conference, BYuT press office reported.

She did not rule out the possibility that BYuT would block the podium in parliament to prevent a vote on the language law.

Yulia Tymoshenko stressed that by raising the language issue, the government is trying to divert public attention from economic and social problems.

"They want to split society and hold elections based on division rather than unity. I don’t think that the official status of the Ukrainian language prevents other languages from developing freely."

“I’m from a Russian-speaking family myself,” the head of the BYuT fraction said. “But my mother has never experienced discomfort that there is one state language - Ukrainian - in the country. I don’t want the tragedy of civil conflict to start with such laws."
