Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryshchenko has met Dunja Mijatovic, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, currently on a visit to Ukraine to become familiar with the situation in the functioning of the media and the rights of journalists in our country.

During the meeting, Hryshchenko stressed that the Ukrainian side attaches importance to and fully supports the activities of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, whose mandate aims to monitor the situation with freedom of speech in all the OSCE 56 member states, UKRINFORM reported.

Ukraine's top diplomat briefed about the steps undertaken by the Ukrainian government to address the shortcomings in legislation and law enforcement in protecting the rights of journalists, which the OSCE and the Council of Europe point to. The minister said that Ukraine's leadership values the highly qualified assistance provided by authoritative European institutions when dealing with issues such as the elaboration and adoption of a law on access to information and the creation of public television.

In turn, Dunja Mijatovic appreciated the readiness of the Ukrainian authorities to cooperate with her and the speed with which she received an invitation to visit Ukraine with a familiarization visit. She stressed that Ukraine is traditionally regarded in Europe as a model country in terms of rights to freedom of speech, and as the OSCE Special Representative she is ready to help so that this further continue. At the same time, Mijatovic noted that as the professional media expert she can clearly distinguish the real problems with ensuring media freedom and attempts to exploit these issues in the context of political struggle.
