The cancellation of the 2004 political reforms will pave the way for election fraud, says Yulia Tymoshenko, former prime minister and leader of the Batkivshchyna Party.

"The Ukrainian people are being deprived of their legal right to change the government through fair elections," Yulia Tymoshenko said during a phone conversation with former US presidential candidate Senator John McCain.

Yulia Tymoshenko warned of the danger stemming from that fact that control over all branches of power currently rests in the hands of one person – the president.

"With this ruling, the Constitutional Court violated all the provisions of the Constitution. Near absolute power, seized unconstitutionally, is now in the hands of one person – President Yanukovych, whose policies violate Ukraine’s national interests. We are swiftly returning to authoritarianism and a de fact one-party system," she said.

Yulia Tymoshenko also told John McCain about the ruling party’s attempts to falsify the electoral process and the results of the local government polls, which will become a model for rigging future parliamentary and presidential elections.

"If Ukraine loses its independence and democracy, this will affect not only life in our country, but all of Europe," underscored the former Ukrainian prime minister.

Senator McCain expressed concern over the difficult situation in Ukraine and voiced his support for the Ukrainian people in their struggle for democracy and the preservation of their independence. He stressed that he will do everything he can to prevent the collapse of democracy in Ukraine.

"Ukraine is very important for the entire world. Your country must stay on its democratic path of development and now allow its independence to be threatened," he said.
