In New York, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych met with Joseph Deiss, President of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly, presidential press office reported.

Speaking at the meeting, Viktor Yanukovych stressed the importance of revitalizing the UN General Assembly activities aimed aat countering challenges of the present.

From his part, Joseph Deiss said that he had listened to the speech of the President of Ukraine on the progress in reaching the Millennium Development Goals carefully. He congratulated Ukraine on the successful realization of these objectives at this time.

Viktor Yanukovych and Joseph Deiss have discussed preparations for the international conference dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy, being conducted in Ukraine. Viktor Yanukovych invited Joseph Deiss to take part in the conference. He also said that not all the problems associated with the Chernobyl disaster have yet been solved.

The President of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly expressed confidence that the issue of overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl accident is important not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole region. "The Chernobyl disaster was a lesson that we are to fully comprehend," he said.

Joseph Deiss stressed that the world appreciates active and consistent position of Ukraine in matters of nuclear safety.

Viktor Yanukovych and Joseph Deiss have also discussed the reforms, being conducted in Ukraine. "As a former government official, I see that you have a systematic approach to economic and social reforms,” Joseph Deiss said.
