President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych met with President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mevlut Cavusoglu, presidential press office reported.

Viktor Yanukovych praised the opportunity to exchange views with Mevlut Cavusoglu on the key issues of Ukraine’s development on the eve of the Parliamentary Assembly October session.

"I evaluate our cooperation and the 2008-2011 Action Plan as successful," Viktor Yanukovych said, stressing that the document directly coincides with the steps that the Government of Ukraine is implementing in the context of reforms in our state.

Speaking of reforms, the President noted that Ukraine is already reforming the judiciary and criminal justice. "All these measures definitely contribute to protection of human rights and the fight against money laundering," Viktor Yanukovych stressed.

In this context, the President praised practical steps towards judicial reform, in particular, conducting the 10th Extraordinary Congress of Judges of Ukraine, which has opened the way to implementation of the Law on Judicial System and Status of Judges.

"This step will strengthen the independence of judges and simplify the procedure of access to justice for every citizen," Viktor Yanukovych said.

The President also noted that he had signed the Decree establishing a working group on reforming the system of criminal justice, so that it could make preliminary suggestions on reforms in this area to ensure better protection of constitutional rights of citizens and implementation of international democratic standards.
