Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he will insist that the Verkhovna Rada hold an extraordinary session in order to amend the law on local elections, and that he will submit his bill of amendments on August 25.

"On August 25, right after Independence Day, I will sign [a bill of] amendments to the [local] election law and insist that the parliament hold an extraordinary session to ensure that we amend the law, and that political parties have a chance to participate in the elections under the new law," he told reporters in Kaniv on Monday.

As reported, Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn earlier told Interfax-Ukraine that an extraordinary session of parliament would be convened before the end of August.
