Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych will head to Germany on August 30 to push for integration into the European Union, the country's head of information policies said on Thursday, RIA Novosti reported.

"We see Germany as a country with interests in Ukraine's movement toward European standards in economy, leadership and energy," Oleh Voloshyn said at a Foreign Ministry briefing.

Voloshyn also expressed his belief that Germany would back Ukraine's entrance into the European Union.

"Our goal is to convince the Germans that Ukraine is an asset for the European community," he said.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Natalia Zarudnaya told Deutsche Welle in an interview on Tuesday that German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Yanukovych would also discuss the issue of organized crime and terrorism, both of which are important elements for integration.

She also said that issues concerning "further progress in liberalization of the visa regime will also be discussed."

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryschenko is currently in Germany to prepare for Yanukovych's visit.
