Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych congratulated the nation on the Day of Conversion of the Kyiv Russ into Christianity.
"The way to welfare and prosperity of our nation lies today not only through economic growth. Faith also plays an important role, as a pledge of consent in society," Yanukovych said in his address.
The head of state called Christianity "a life-giving force, which helped the Ukrainian people survive in difficult times, while church was defending ideals of faith and enriched it with holiness."
Yanukovych, who spends holidays in Crimea, has today participated in the Divine Liturgy in honor of the Holy and Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr at the Volodymyr Cathedral in the National Reserve Chersonesos Taurica in Sevastopol. It is the Chersonesos where Great Prince Volodymyr was christened in 988.
But the main celebrations took place in Kyiv with Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill and Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Volodymyr concelebrated the Divine Liturgy at Cathedral Square of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
