President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych met in Crimea with State Border Guard Service Chairman Mykola Lytvyn. At the meeting the officials have discussed reforms in the Border Guard Service.

"I would like our Border Guard Service to be of the European model. So that it was a modern law enforcement agency that fights illegal migration, terrorist threats, drug trafficking, etc.," said Viktor Yanukovich, speaking of his vision of these reforms' direction.

The President of Ukraine stressed that reforms in the Border Guard Service must be stirred up due to the fact that Ukraine hosts Euro 2012 championship. He instructed to finish all the work before the end of 2011.

In his turn, Mykola Lytvyn reassured the President that the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has a systemic vision of its development. According to him, in response to the instructions of the President of Ukraine the concept of integrated border management is being worked out, which will allow to prepare for Euro 2012 and bring current procedures and standards of state border management in line with European requirements.

The State Border Guard Chairman praised the fact that for the first time in the history of our state the Parliament has passed the law on border control, which is based on the Schengen code of laws the European Union relies on. According to him, the Government has adopted eight resolutions, which simplify the formalities during the preparation and holding Euro 2012.

Mykola Lytvyn also said that the Service has developed necessary legislation and Government documents that provide opportunities to further develop the Service as a law enforcement authority.
