According to the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine (SSC), 45.888 million people lived in Ukraine as of May 1, 2010. Population declined by 74,600 people in January-April 2010, according to the press service of the Ministry of Ukraine for Family, Youth and Sports informed, according to NRCU.

Population fell only due to the natural decrease. Natural population decline reduced against January-April 2009. The highest death rate was observed in Chernihiv region and the lowest in Kyiv.

At the same time, in January-April, population growth was registered in the three Ukrainian regions, namely   in Zakarpattia region (479 people), Rivne region (174) and the city of Kyiv (391). In general, the birth rate has declined over the period.

Migration gain of 5,900 people was recorded in the country. Those who arrived in Ukraine in January-April 2010 included immigrants from the CIS countries (78.2%) and citizens from other countries (21.8%). Some 55.5% of those who left Ukraine went to the CIS countries and 44.5% to other countries.

According to the SSC, as of January 1, 2010 population made up 45.96 million people. The latest population census was conducted in Ukraine in 2001. Then 48.457 million people lived in the country. The next census is scheduled for the next year, but it is expected to be postponed until 2012.
