A proportional election system with open lists is best for Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko said during a press conference in Poltava.

"Open lists mean that a person selects a member of a party and the best person in the district. It combines two qualities – a good deputy and person who is ideologically in the political force the person supports or doesn’t support," she said, according to BYuT press office.

According to Yulia Tymoshenko, this electoral system "will give people what they expect most – they will know their deputy, know how he looks, can ask him about his work, and at the same time support a strategy for the country."

Yulia Tymoshenko noted that "Yanukovych’s people want 50% majoritarian and 50% proportional on the level of the raions, cities and oblasts."

"It’s his people, because he really doesn’t understand what’s going on. In the last interview he said that he’s for a majoritarian system of elections for village councils and that he will fight for this, that he will hold consultations and adopt such laws. But he doesn’t seem to know that there has always been a majoritarian system in the village councils. He doesn’t seem to know what he’s fighting for, but those around him sure do," said Yulia Tymoshenko.
