"What happened on April 27 in the Verkhovna Rada requires detailed study and investigation. On all the videos, news stories, all over the Internet, the entire world saw that members of the Party of Regions began beating their colleagues in a show the likes of which haven’t been seen within the walls of parliament since Ukraine’s independence," Andriy Kozhemyakin, the first deputy head of BYuT, said today in the Verkhovna Rada.
He stressed that despite the different assessments made of the April 27 events, one can argue that the ratification of the Kharkiv agreement is unconstitutional.
"Today they’re trying to make April 27 the starting point for large-scale political repression against the opposition despite the fact that the opposition protested the ratification in a legal manner. Even from a formal standpoint – there were only 211 people’s deputies registered in the session hall for ratification, the agreements signed by President Yanukovych weren’t subject to review by relevant committees, and members of parliament hadn’t read the text. But most importantly: the agreements go against the national interests and essentially exclude Ukraine from European integration processes," said Andriy Kozhemyakin, according to BYuT press office.
He noted that the Prosecutor General’s Office "wants to prosecute two deputies from Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defense" event though "it was deputies from the Party of Regions that started the fight, and it was their deputies that injured deputy Oles Doniy, who is still in the hospital with a serious concussion."
"Therefore, the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc states that we are categorically against the selective approach to finding those responsible, and we will not allow deputies from the opposition to be made the crazy ones," added Kozhemyakin.
After the vote in parliament on April 27 ratifying the Kharkiv agreement on the Russian Black Sea Fleet, Yulia Tymoshenko called the events another stage in the coup and use of force and desecration of the Constitution. "Everything that happened today is unconstitutional, just like everything that Yanukovych has done since coming to power," she said.
