In Strasbourg President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland.

At a joint press conference following the meeting President Yanukovych noted the sincerity and productiveness of their conversation. According to the President, he reaffirmed to the Secretary General Ukraine's commitment to "European integration, democracy development, implementation and introduction of European standards of living and to fulfill obligations undertaken by Ukraine when joining the Council of Europe."

"We have initiated changes that will enable us to elevate the level of democracy and standards in Ukraine to a new, much higher level," he said, noting that these are primarily deep social-economic reforms, open and honest dialogue with the public and partners and development of a new pan-European security system.

"Ukraine has its voice in the Council of Europe and makes the contribution that will be ensuring European progress in the development of democracy and human rights," said Viktor Yanukovych.

From his part, Secretary General Jagland has stressed the importance of Ukraine for the Council of Europe and emphasized that the organization will continue to support implementation of reforms in our country. "Ukraine makes important contribution into development of the Council of Europe and the process of European unification," said Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
