Together with leaders of other states President Viktor Yanukovych took
part in the official funeral mass for President Lech Kaczynski and his
wife Maria, held in the Polish city of Krakow.
Yanukovych attended a mass at St. Mary's Basilica. In the VIP sector the President of Ukraine was sitting with the Presidents of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite and Russia Dmitry Medvedev.
On behalf of Ukrainian people President Yanukovych expressed condolences to relatives and friends of Lech and Maria Kaczynski, Polish leadership and all the Poles.
"This is a great loss. In these difficult days we mourn together with the Polish people", said Viktor Yanukovych.
The President also stressed that Ukraine has always been and will remain a reliable partner for Poland.
According to Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine will remember Lech Kaczynski as a statesman who opened a qualitatively new phase in relations between the two countries.
The Polish President and his wife were buried at the Wawel Castle in Krakow. The 21-gun salute was fired in their honor.
In Krakow the flags are flying at half-mast decorated with black mourning ribbons. State flags in temporary residences of the foreign delegations’ heads who arrived at the farewell ceremony with the Polish President are also flying at half-mast.
