Ukraine is interested in the creation of a free trade area with Canada, Ukrainian Economy Minister Vasyl Tsushko said at a meeting with Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine Daniel Caron, the Economy Ministry's press service reported, according to UKRINFORM.

The sides discussed issues of the further development of Ukrainian-Canadian cooperation in trade, economy and investment. The aerospace sphere, energy, agriculture and pharmaceutical sectors, transport, etc. were determined as priority sectors for bilateral cooperation.

Tsushko also thanked the Canadian government for providing Ukraine for 19 years with technical assistance as part of programs of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) aimed at supporting democratic processes and market-oriented economy in Ukraine, resolving social and environmental issues, reforming the spheres of public management, as well as developing small and medium businesses.

Caron, in turn, said he hoped that Ukrainian-Canadian cooperation would be strengthened in future.

Tsushko said that as of January 1, 2010, Canada had invested USD 109.6 million in the Ukrainian economy.
